Steve Midway Named Editor-in-Chief of Transactions of the American Fisheries Society

April 23, 2025 – Bethesda, MD: After an international search, AFS President Miguel Garcia has announced that Steve Midway of Louisiana State University has been selected as the next Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of Transactions of the American Fisheries Society. Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, the flagship journal of AFS, is a highly regarded international journal of fisheries science that has been published continuously since 1872. It features results of basic and applied research in genetics, physiology, biology, ecology, population dynamics, economics, health, culture, and other topics germane to marine and freshwater finfish and shellfish and their respective fisheries and environments.
Steve Midway is a professor in the Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His work ranges from headwaters to offshore, ecology of fish and other species and systems, and from basic biology to human dimensions. Midway has held a variety of editorial roles both within Transactions of the American Fisheries Society and with other journals, along with serving as chair of the AFS Publications Overview Committee. He has been a member of AFS for nearly 20 years and recently co-chaired the AFS Publisher’s Selection Committee and served on the AFS AI Committee. “We delighted to welcome Steve to this important position with our journals,” said AFS President Garcia. “His extensive experience in fisheries science, long involvement in AFS, and leadership in scientific publishing will be an asset to this prestigious publication.”
The EIC steers the journal, ensuring that the journal’s objectives and missions are being met. They work closely with the editorial board to address critical and timely issues in the scientific field while providing guidance and oversight.
“I’m excited to assume the role of Editor-in-Chief following my previous work with this journal that is so rich in history,” said Midway. “I’m looking forward to working with our editors, associate editors, reviewers, and authors to build upon that legacy while exploring new frontiers in fisheries research and management.”
