At the 2005 American Fisheries Society (AFS) annual meeting, when the topic for the 2007 AFS–Sea Grant symposium was being discussed, the prevalence of natural hazards was fresh in everyone’s minds. With the images of the Gulf Coast hurricanes less than a month old and the ravages of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami still a recent tragedy, it was decided that the impact of such events on fisheries and fishing communities should be highlighted in the fifth AFS–Sea Grant symposium.
