In May 2003, a full page op-ed in The Seattle Times advocated a “total effort” to recover salmon in the Puget Sound region. Noting that Seattle’s creeks “were once choked with salmon,” the headline asked, “Do we have the courage to bring them back?” (Simmons 2003). Unfortunately, this is the wrong question—dangerously wrong if our goal is to save not only salmon but also the larger natural heritage of our region.
