A great deal has been written about the need for sustainability of North American salmon fisheries (e.g., Knudsen et al. 2000) and about the challenges impeding progress toward this goal. We believe the chapters assembled herein make valuable contributions to the review and analysis of salmon sustainability in the United States and Canada. By compiling and comparing information from these chapters about salmon management across regions and disciplines, we offer further insight into the factors that hinder as well as promote salmon sustainability. From this, we develop recommendations for progressing toward sustainability in the areas of policy, management, communications, and research.
