The fisheries workplace is continually evolving. Are you prepared for the opportunities and challenges that these changes will create? For instance, the fisheries workforce is increasingly generationally diverse, with Millennials working alongside Generation Xs, Baby Boomers, and Generation Zs (i.e., post-Millennials). Moreover, state and federal agencies, non-governmental agencies, academia, and other fisheries sectors have ever-changing workplace conditions and priorities. Understanding the causes and effects of these fisheries workplace changes is key to ensuring that we, as a profession, can manage fisheries successfully and sustainably.
In this webinar we’ll hear from fisheries experts Dr. Bill Fisher (retired Professor, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) and Dr. Kelly Millenbah (Senior Associate Dean, Director of Academic and Student Affairs, Michigan State University) about changes in the fisheries workplace and how to best position ourselves – individually and as a profession – for success.
Presenters:
Bill Fisher is a recently retired professor of fisheries and aquatic ecology. Over the course of his 40-year career, he worked for state and federal agencies as water quality biologist in Kansas, an aquatic biologist in Kentucky, a research associate at Oklahoma State University (OSU), a stream ecologist with the USFWS at Auburn University, a research ecologist with the Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at OSU, a fisheries biologist the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Cornell University, and finally a professor in the College and Natural Resources at University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. Bill was active in service to the American Fisheries Society (AFS), serving on a variety of regional and national committees, as chapter (Alabama) and division (Southern) president, and president of AFS from 2011-12. Bill will draw from his variety of professional experiences and geographic locations to provide personal insights, lessons he learned during his career and advise for current and future fisheries professionals.
Dr. Kelly F. Millenbah is the Senior Associate Dean and Director for Academic and Student Affairs in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University (MSU). In that role, she oversees the academic and student affairs portfolio of the college (including 2-year certificate, undergraduate and graduate programs encompassing approximately 4,800 students) and manages the college’s General Fund account. She is also a Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. Millenbah is a scholar of natural resources education with a focus on teaching and learning within the classroom, curricular design and development, and recruitment and retention of students in the sciences. She earned her B.A. degree in Biology from Ripon College, Ripon, Wisconsin, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Fisheries and Wildlife at MSU. Millenbah previously served as the Associate Director of the Environmental Science and Policy Program, Director of Academic Programs in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and Associate Dean of Lyman Briggs College (a residential college for students interested in the sciences), all at MSU. She has been recognized for her commitment to teaching and learning through several awards including a Lilly Teaching Fellowship, the MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan Quality in Undergraduate Teaching Award, the Sigma Alpha Agriculture Advocate Award. She is also the recipient of MSU’s Simmons Chivukula Academic Leadership Award and the College of
Agriculture and Natural Resources Distinguished Faculty Award.
