In this second edition, we re-emphasize the importance of developing and sustaining a standard sampling program to support fish population, fish assemblage, and fisheries assessments. The methods remain the same with some refinements of techniques and gear descriptions following the input of agencies who implemented the methods of the first edition (e.g., refined description of gear [Appendix Tables A.1 and A.2] and electrofishing gear and methods [see Chapter 18]). The details for developing a sampling program for large coldwater rivers remain in this edition, and new text has been added to address the broader issues of sampling programs (i.e., statistical analysis/survey design, managing data, standardization of electrofishing, and indices for catch per unit effort and physiological end points).
