Thank you to those who submitted a symposium proposal for the upcoming AFS Annual Meeting in Spokane, Washington.
|
After review of the proposals, we identified several key topics that we hope can still be included in the program. We are re-opening the “Call for Symposia” looking specifically for proposals addressing the following topics: hatchery management and supplementation efforts, fish disease and pathogens, policy, regional topics of interest (e.g., Snake River dam removal), invasive species, DEI-related topics, and AFS Section-related sessions.

If you were unable to meet the previous deadline but have a proposal for another topic, please feel free to submit, but we will not guarantee inclusion in the program as a symposium. This targeted “Call for Symposia” will close on February 18th. Additionally, we will accept proposals for Continuing Education Courses/Workshops until February 18th. The “Call for Abstracts” will open in late February.

The AFS Alaska Chapter submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Agriculture calling for reinstatement of the Roadless Rule in the Tongass National Forest, providing an excellent example of policy engagement by a Chapter.

The authors of this paper analyzed multiple historical data sources (circa 1948–1960) to estimate migration timing and abundance of Olympic Peninsula winter steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss in the Quillayute, Hoh, Queets, and Quinault rivers, Washington, to provide context for contemporary (circa 1980–2017) population trends.

Management of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus fishery in the Gulf of Mexico is the responsibility of the individual states under the purview of a regional management plan. States generally follow the “2-S” system of management, placing emphasis on size and sex. Despite management policies, harvest and juvenile abundances remain in decline.

It is evident that fishery stakeholder groups are not homogenous, and that inter- and intra-group variation can exist in the form of unique perspectives, motivations for fishery participation, and receptiveness to management measures. However, management agencies often allocate quota and design regulatory plans around distinct groups, such as recreational versus commercial sectors. This study used the commercial fishery for Striped Bass Morone saxatilis as a case study to explore the motivations and behaviors of commercial fishers in Massachusetts.

The 2022 Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology application period closes in less than a month! All high school students in the classes of 2022, 2023, and 2024 in the USA, Mexico, and Canada are eligible to submit an application. Students who are selected into the program will be paired with a mentor at a fisheries institution no more than a 30-45 minute drive from their home. Students can apply through this link.
