SCIENCE

The Genetic Composition of Wild Steelhead Based on Spatial Proximity to a Hatchery

Limited evidence of hatchery genetic influence was found in wild steelhead stock in the lower and upper Clearwater River, Idaho. Evidence of genetic overlap was found in tributaries in closer proximity to the hatchery and in tributaries where hatchery fish have been used to re-establish and supplement extirpated wild stocks. The genetic overlap could be from contemporary or historical influences. The paper outlines a useful genetic tool to assess the influence of hatchery fish in management scenarios where two stocks of fish (hatchery and wild) overlap.

AFS has an award for that.

POLICY

Conservation and Outdoor Organizations Urge Congress to Keep 2023 Waters of the US Rule in Place

A group of outdoors and conservation organizations urged the Senate to vote against H.J. Res. 27/S.J. Res. 7, which would invalidate the Biden administration’s recently finalized “waters of the United States” (WOTUS) regulation.
