Proposals are due by January 27.

Every four years, delegates from around the world meet to exchange ideas and perspectives about new research, emerging issues, scientific breakthroughs, and governance related to fisheries science, industry, conservation, and management. The International Program Committee is pleased to invite proposals for sessions for the 9th World Fisheries Congress, March 3-9, 2024 in Seattle, Washington. We encourage session proposals related to the meeting’s theme, Fish and Fisheries at the Water–Energy–Food Nexus, as well as any other timely and coherent subjects of broad interest to fisheries professionals. The deadline for proposals has been extended until January 13.

We welcome all people interested in fisheries science, management, and conservation throughout Latin America and the Caribbean to join us under the theme of "Bridging Fish, Fisheries Science, and Conservation Across the Americas." The Congress will address both freshwater and marine systems and include 21 symposia, training opportunities, student events, and much more. Abstracts are due by February 10, 2023.

Reflections on Forest Management: Can Fish and Fiber Coexist? Edited by Robert J. Danehy, C. Andrew Dolloff, and Gordon H. Reeves.
|
Chapters review and describe the interactions of fish and other aquatic biota with forest management, including impacts of forest management to fish communities, unique impacts on migratory fishes, and impacts on other biota, including rare taxa. The development of forestry best management practices (BMPs) is presented from different perspectives and regions of North America, and several chapters highlight the role and efficacy of BMPs in supporting aquatic biota. The promise of BMPs as stewardship measures to make a difference in the sustainability and recovery of imperiled aquatic taxa is examined and evaluated.

Reflections is intended as a reference for aquatic biologists, foresters, and other natural resource specialists and as source material for anyone interested in exploring the evolution of the complex relationship of forest management to aquatic biota.

AFS is now seeking an Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for Fisheries magazine. The EIC ensures that the magazine objectives and mission are being met; recruits, appoints, and oversees a diverse editorial board; solicits high-quality contributions to the magazine, including review articles, select special issues, and special features; facilitates the peer review process; regularly liaises with the EICs of other AFS journals and the publications office to ensure program cohesion; and makes recommendations to enhance the vitality and prestige of the magazine. An annual honorarium of $10,000 paid quarterly is provided. To be considered, send a current curriculum vitae along with a cover letter of interest to [email protected].

Mature American Eels migrate down rivers to spawn in the ocean, and may pass hydropower dams where the risk of entrainment in turbine intakes is high. In this study, eels were passed through a novel propeller-style turbine with a survival rate of 100%, a substantial improvement over conventional turbines.

Recovering America's Wildlife Act Update
|
We are sorely disappointed to report that the Recovering America's Wildlife Act was not included in the omnibus funding bill despite a tremendous effort by a broad bipartisan coalition. This bill was the last chance for passing the bill this Congress. We very much appreciate all of the hard work of AFS leadership, chapters, and members in getting this bill closer to reality than any time in the last 25 years. We will work to have it re-introduced next Congress and continue to build awareness of the need for significant, proactive, dedicated funding for state and tribal conservation of at-risk fish and wildlife. We appreciate the leadership of Rep. Debbie Dingell and Senators Martin Heinrich and Roy Blunt.

Hutton Scholar applications for Summer 2023 are now open! Since 2001, the Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program has worked to create diversity and stimulate interest in fisheries science and aquatic resource management by recruiting high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to be paired with a mentor for a paid summer internship. The deadline to apply is February 14, 2023.

The AFS officers recently gathered at the AFS offices in Bethesda for their annual retreat. The agenda included a diversity training session presented by Two Brown Girls, based out of Washington, D.C., which was also attended by AFS staff and diversity leaders.
