We welcome all people interested in fisheries science, management, and conservation throughout Latin America and the Caribbean to join us under the theme of "Bridging Fish, Fisheries Science, and Conservation Across the Americas." The Congress will address both freshwater and marine systems and include 21 symposia, training opportunities, student events, and much more. Abstracts are due by February 10, 2023.

Every four years, delegates from around the world meet to exchange ideas and perspectives about new research, emerging issues, scientific breakthroughs, and governance related to fisheries science, industry, conservation, and management. The International Program Committee is pleased to invite proposals for sessions for the 9th World Fisheries Congress, March 3-9, 2024 in Seattle, Washington. We encourage session proposals related to the meeting’s theme, Fish and Fisheries at the Water–Energy–Food Nexus, as well as any other timely and coherent subjects of broad interest to fisheries professionals. The deadline for proposals has been extended until January 13.

With only two weeks left in the current session of Congress, conservation and sporting organizations representing millions of people from around the country joined forces to call for passage of the Recovering America's Wildlife Act. The groups warned that failure to provide this additional funding for conservation efforts would endanger not only hundreds of at-risk fish and wildlife species, but the $862 billion outdoor industry, which employs 4.5 million Americans.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission unanimously voted to end the operating licenses on the lower four Klamath River dams, removing the last major regulatory hurdle to a $500 million project that would be the largest dam removal and river restoration project in the world.

Horseshoe crabs (Limulidae) are ancient superheroes still walking our beaches today. Besides being a favored prey item for many fish, birds, and sea turtles, pharmaceutical companies use the horseshoe crab's unique blue blood to ensure intravenous drugs are free of harmful bacteria. Historically, horseshoe crabs thrived along Florida's extensive shoreline, but population estimates are lacking. Comprehensive surveys across all coastal habitats by paid faculty or staff are financially and logistically impossible. To address data gaps and better inform fishery managers, collaborators created the Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch program.

Citizen scientist “Grunion Greeters” have proven to be effective monitors for beach-spawning runs of the California Grunion, Leuresthes tenuis, for nearly two decades. This marine fish fully emerges from water to spawn on sandy beaches on the Pacific coast of California and Baja California.

Since the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic, outdoor recreation has exploded in popularity in response to closures of indoor recreation options, increased free time, and/or increased levels of stress. Researchers tested for the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sale of fishing licenses in Wisconsin and on vehicle counts that were observed at public lake access points in Vilas County, Wisconsin, in 2020. Sales of fishing licenses to first time buyers exploded in Wisconsin during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vehicle numbers at lake access points increased at lakes surrounded by more public land in the summer of 2020, suggesting increased fishing effort at "hotspot" lakes.

Hutton Scholar applications for Summer 2023 open on December 12! Since 2001, the Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program has worked to create diversity and stimulate interest in fisheries science and aquatic resource management by recruiting high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to be paired with a mentor for a paid summer internship. The deadline to apply is February 14, 2023.
