The bipartisan Advancing the Quality and Understanding of American Aquaculture (AQUAA) Act of 2020 to establish national standards for sustainable offshore aquaculture was introduced in the Senate in September. The bill would designate the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as the lead federal agency for marine aquaculture. The legislation would also direct NOAA to harmonize the permitting system for offshore aquaculture for farms in federal waters, and direct the agency to lead a research and development grant program to spur innovation throughout the industry. Learn more about the need for this legislation in Fisheries.

Fish are among the most biodiverse vertebrate groups on the planet, playing vital ecosystem roles, supporting considerable commercial, recreational, and artisanal fisheries, and delivering critical ecosystem goods and services for the world's human population. These intrinsic, ecological, and socioeconomic values of fish are well recognized. Much less widely appreciated are the diverse additional ways that fish have contributed to human societies.

Recent reviews of salmon and steelhead hatchery programs have led to recommendations to reform hatchery practices and produce better supplementation outcomes. Of particular concern were reductions in performance of supplemented populations due to domestication selection attributed to hatchery production. One key recommendation was to achieve an index of domestication selection termed proportionate natural influence of 0.67 or higher. The Priest Rapids Hatchery, located adjacent to the Columbia River below Priest Rapids Dam, was one of the hatcheries included in this review.

Diversity in steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss is often characterized by varying time spent in freshwater and saltwater environments. However, ontogenetic shifts are not often highlighted as an important diversity characteristic in salmonids. Larger water bodies can play a key role in population stability by buffering limited resources in smaller tributary systems. Based on freshwater and saltwater ages of adult steelhead in Fish Creek, Idaho, there were 12 different life history trajectories observed.

Light trap captures of larval, endangered Razorback Sucker Xyrauchen texanus are used to guide flow release timing from reservoirs and measure Razorback Sucker annual reproductive success in the Green River, Utah. However, little is known regarding efficacy of light traps to capture or retain larvae under variable and field‐relevant environmental conditions. Laboratory experiments were used to investigate various factors affecting capture and retention probabilities of five early life stages of Razorback Sucker.
