World Fish Migration Day is a global celebration to create awareness about the importance of migratory fish and free-flowing rivers. The American Fisheries Society joined communities around the world celebrating this important day. We’ve put together a virtual collection highlighting just a few of the ways in which fish scientists and managers are identifying migratory issues and helping fish break free.

A fishing tournament started in the 1940s by Japanese Americans just released from WWII internment camps provides a unique multidecadal data set for examining trends in the size of Puget Sound Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. Trends in body size include not only declines but also periods of increase in size.

It usually happens at least once during every fisheries or natural resources management meeting I go to. I scan the room and realize: I'm the only one. At one meeting in a room with 50+ people, I locked eyes with the woman I walked in with and almost simultaneously we said: “We're the only ones.” The only people of color in the room.

Forage fish are a critical component of marine ecosystems because they integrate energy across trophic levels within marine food webs. Many studies have highlighted the importance of this group, and past research efforts have focused largely on studying forage fish within offshore and estuarine areas. This paper highlights the importance of forage fish within inner shelf marine ecosystems using examples from the Northern California Current and describes outstanding research needs for forage fish within this topical area.

AFS recognizes the need to elevate tribal voices and experiences in the fisheries profession. To support North American Tribal students and early career professionals, AFS is offering sponsorships to attend our Annual Meeting, August 21-25, 2022, in Spokane, Washington. This will provide opportunities for tribal college students and early career professionals to attend an international fisheries conference, meet peers and other professionals, attend sponsored events, and broaden their horizons. The application deadline is Friday, June 3, 2022.

The Education Section's Undergraduate Travel Assistance Award (UTAA) is designed to help introduce undergraduate students to AFS meetings and increase participation at the Society level. The UTAA helps undergraduates to offset the cost of travel to the AFS Annual Meeting, held in Spokane this year! Four undergraduates will be selected to receive US $500. Apply by June 30.
