Increasing post‐release survival of discarded fishes is a critical challenge to the development of effective conservation and management strategies for a multitude of commercial and recreational fisheries. Among reef fishes, this challenge is further complicated by pressure‐related injuries collectively known as barotrauma. Left alone, these injuries are often fatal. Tactics to mitigate the adverse effects of barotrauma, including piercing an expanded swim bladder to release trapped gas (venting) and using a specially designed device to return a fish to the depth of capture (descending), have been well‐described and readily adopted by regulatory agencies as best practices.

Despite expanding research on the popular recreational fishery, bonefish taxonomy remains murky. The genus Albula, comprising these iconic circumtropical marine sportfishes, has a complex taxonomic history driven by highly conserved morphology. Presently, 12 putative species are spread among 3 species complexes. The cryptic morphology hinders visual identification, requiring genetic species identification in some cases.

Downstream migration of juveniles (smolts) is key to the lifecycle of ocean-going (anadromous) salmonids and varies along climatic gradients. Native steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss are widely distributed, but migration in the southern part of its range is poorly understood. In this study, the author reports patterns of migration and potential environmental drivers determining migration timing.

The generalized depletion model is an effective method to assess the exploitation status of elver fisheries for American Eel Anguilla rostrata using only fisheries catch and effort data. The elver fishery of the East River did not have high exploitation pressure on the elver waves passing through. The estimate of annual elver abundance matched well with the fishery-independent abundance index, providing the first empirical support of the generalized depletion model.
