ANNUAL MEETING

Final Abstract Extension

In light of the continuing challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, AFS is providing a final abstract submission deadline of May 18 for the AFS Annual Meeting in Columbus. We are closely following the virus situation and working with authorities in Ohio and nationwide to understand concerns about hosting the meeting. The health and safety of AFS members is clearly the primary concern with the Annual Meeting. Should the meeting be cancelled, AFS will be exploring all other options to allow for your fisheries science to be shared with others in an effective and engaging manner. Please submit your abstract so that we have a complete picture of potential participation if we need explore alternative plans.

FISHERIES

Inexpensive, Underwater Filming of Rare Fishes in High Definition

Inexpensive technological advancements now provide fisheries biologists, managers, and researchers with means never before possible for documenting fish in their natural habitat via underwater videography. In this article, the authors investigated cost efficient and simple methods for capturing and creating high quality, high definition, and informative underwater videos that could be used by people with little or no previous experience in videography.

Ancient Ecology: The Quadra Island Clam Gardens

For millennia, humans around the world have managed terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Along the northeastern Pacific, First Nations and Native Americans sustained large, vibrant populations by developing diverse resource management strategies that increased food production and food security. The legacy of these practices continues to shape coastal ecosystems today. Motivated by ecological observations of Indigenous Peoples, ecologists Sarah Dudas, Kieran Cox, and Morgan J. Black, in collaboration with the Hakai Institute, have evaluated the effects of clam gardens on a range of coastal biota.

SCIENCE

Serum Protein Analysis of Nurse Sharks

This study provides serum protein electrophoresis reference intervals (RI) for Nurse Sharks Ginglymostoma cirratum caught in south Florida. Five serum electrophoresis fractions were established based on mammalian fractions, albumin, alpha-1 globulin, alpha-2 globulin, beta-globulin, and gamma-globulin. Serum electrophoresis RI may be utilized to clinically evaluate the health of Nurse Sharks, both in captivity and in the wild, and to compare health in populations experiencing various anthropogenic stressors.

POLICY

More CRP Farm Acreage Should Be Enrolled

AFS joined other science, conservation, and outdoor groups in calling on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to take advantage of recent program changes and encourage more farmers to sign up for the Conservation Reserve Program.
