Abstract submission for the Virtual Annual Meeting has been reopened until June 15 in order to accommodate those who were unable to commit to submitting an abstract for an in-person meeting in Columbus. There is no need to resubmit your abstract if you already submitted one for the 2020 Annual Meeting!

Seventeen states filed suit challenging the Navigable Waters Protection Rule (NWPR) in a California U.S. District Court asserting that the NWPR is contrary to the Clean Water Act and arbitrary and capricious, in part, because of the EPA’s and the Army Corps’ disregard of scientific evidence. The plaintiffs asked the court to issue a nationwide injunction to prevent the Rule from going into effect. AFS, along with 11 science societies, filed an amicus brief with the court highlighting available data and a scientific tool that were part of the rulemaking record and demonstrating the negative impact the 2020 Rule would have on the nation’s waters.

The Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies (CASS) opposed EPA’s proposed supplemental rule, “Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science,” on the grounds that it would undermine the agency’s ability to use the best available science in its policy-making process and thus impede EPA’s mission to protect human health and the environment.

Electrofishing, broadly defined as the use of electricity to capture or control fish, was envisioned in an 1863 British patent application by Isham Baggs. Not until the 1920s, when large, stationary generators were available, did electrofishing applications (i.e., fish barriers) begin. After World War II , applications of electrofishing for fisheries management accelerated in diversity and portability. As AFS celebrates 150 years, the authors aim to document the development of electrofishing for fisheries management in North America.

Val Kells is scientific illustrator whose work can be seen in aquarium exhibits all across the United States and in numerous field guides and other books. In 2019, Kells illustrated Tunas and Billfishes of the World and illustrated and co‐authored Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes of Virginia. Though her expertise is fishes, Kells also illustrates salamanders, frogs, turtles, marine invertebrates, and many other types of aquatic and terrestrial life. She is a lifelong artist and lover of wildlife and has joined these two passions to create her ideal career.

Across the globe, numerous high‐level strategies have been developed to provide guidance for managing fisheries in the face of climate change, but specific examples of implementation and actionable decision making in real‐world situations to address climate change impacts are generally lacking. In this paper, the authors present a review of tangible actions that have been undertaken to reduce, mitigate, and confront climate change impacts to fisheries at a range of levels from individual choice to federal governance.

Electrofishing studies in the 1990s established that higher frequencies of pulsed DC (e.g., 60 Hz) generally result in more spinal injury to fish in comparison with lower pulse frequencies (e.g., 30 Hz). In response to those findings, some agencies adopted low pulse frequency standards to minimize fish injury. However, those earlier studies did not assess whether capture efficiency (CE) was also influenced by pulse frequency. The authors sampled small trout streams by backpack electrofishing with settings of 30 and 60 Hz to evaluate the effect of pulse frequency on both CE and spinal injury rates for three trout species.
