The bipartisan National Fish Habitat Conservation Through Partnership Act (H.R. 1747) passed in the U.S. House of Representatives as part of a broader package of natural resource legislation last week. The bill also advanced through the Senate in the Committee on Environment and Public Works today as part of the America’s Conservation Enhancement Act (S. 3051.)

The act would authorize funding for the National Fish Habitat Program and its 20 regional partnerships working across the country to conserve priority fish habitats and fish populations. Codifying the program into law would secure consistent federal funding and establish a strategic framework for the restoration and conservation projects implemented through the program.

The bipartisan Recovering America’s Wildlife Act was reported out of the House Natural Resources Committee on December 5, positioning it for a vote on the House floor. The bill would fund proactive conservation efforts to prevent species from becoming endangered and would provide additional funding for species that are already listed.

Antibiotic use in animal production, including aquaculture, has become a controversial subject in recent years. It is unclear whether antibiotic use by fish hatcheries or farms is functionally related to the development of resistance in important human pathogens. Nevertheless, antimicrobial resistance is relevant to aquaculture because it may reduce the effectiveness of the limited treatment options available for fish health management.

The American Fisheries Society is proud to announce that Kristen Anstead has been appointed as the new Co-Chief Science Editor for Fisheries magazine. In this position, Anstead will be responsible for overseeing the peer review process for scientific papers submitted to the magazine.

Fishery‐dependent communities in coastal environments are often vulnerable to hurricanes, but diverse and accessible fisheries may buffer the effects of extreme storms and promote community resilience. The authors began evaluating this possibility with a qualitative study in the Lowe Sound and Red Bays communities in The Bahamas immediately after the impact of a category 4 hurricane.
