Quantifying the Monetary Value of Alaska National Forests to Commercial Pacific Salmon Fisheries

The temperate rain forest ecoregion along the west coast of North America is home to five species of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. that support subsistence, personal‐use, sport, and commercial fisheries. This study aimed to quantify the number and monetary value of commercially caught Pacific salmon originating from Alaska's Tongass and Chugach national forests, two adjacent national forests containing some of the world's largest remaining tracts of intact temperate rain forest.

Changes in Physiology and Stress Responses of Pellet‐Reared Largemouth Bass Fed Live‐Forage Diets

Advanced‐sized Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides to be used for stocking and experimentation can be efficiently reared on prepared feed in intensive culture conditions, but formulated diets containing high levels (≥20%) of dietary carbohydrates may lead to high liver and muscle lipid and high liver glycogen levels, which may affect survival and stress responses.

Bomb Radiocarbon Age Validation of Warsaw Grouper and Snowy Grouper

Current stock assessments for both the Warsaw Grouper Hyporthodus nigritus and the Snowy Grouper H. niveatus are based on age‐structured population models determined using traditional otolith‐based aging techniques. However, recent studies using bomb radiocarbon validation have shown that many deepwater fishes live much longer than previously estimated when relying on conventional age determination methods.

Climate Challenge

This year, President Scott Bonar is challenging AFS members to talk to 10 friends, family members, or acquaintances who disagree with you about climate change or some other conservation issue. Step out of your comfort zone and try some outreach on this important topic - Scott has put together some materials to help you get started.

For more tips on making a difference, see Scott's column in this month's Fisheries. And look for more AFS climate initiatives in coming months.

POLICY

Speak Up for Imperiled Fish and Fish Habitat

Two important fish conservation bills need your support to advance in Congress. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, H.R. 3742, directs $1.4 billion annually to state fish and wildlife agencies and tribes for proactive conservation of imperiled species. The bill now boasts more than 150 bi-partisan co-sponsors.

The National Fish Habitat Conservation through Partnerships Act, H.R.1747/S. 754, aims to codify an existing program into law that protects, restores, and enhances fish habitat across the country. State and regional partnerships are used to leverage and focus resources to conserve key habitats through activities such as planting stream-side vegetation and restoring fish passage.

Help us advance these two key fisheries bills before the end of the year by asking your member of Congress to co-sponsor the legislation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Give to Fisheries on #GivingTuesday

Mark your calendars for December 3 for GivingTuesday, a global movement that unleashes the power of people and organizations to transform the world. Consider supporting fisheries by giving to AFS! In 2018, AFS welcomed 97 first-time donors—several who made their first gifts on this very day. New initiatives such as The 1870 Society help us recognize generous contributions and the AFS legacy as we celebrate our 150th anniversary in 2020. You can give with confidence to AFS! Gifts of all sizes are appreciated. You can provide general support—helping AFS support programs and areas of most need—or designate support for specific programs in the areas of education, awards, and community.

Call for 2020 Symposium Proposals

Come celebrate 150 years of fisheries ecology, conservation, and management with fisheries students and professionals from around the world. Symposium proposal submission is now open for the 150th Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society, August 30 - September 3, 2020, in Columbus, Ohio.
