In this article, the authors discuss Goliath Grouper's biology, the controversy surrounding its protection, and the drawbacks of re‐establishing a fishery including: loss of nursery habitat, increasingly destructive episodic events like red tide and cold snaps, and the effects of mercury contamination on survival. Add to this the human health risk of consuming mercury‐contaminated fishes, and the argument supporting re‐opening the fishery evaporates.

Denmark has long fisheries and aquaculture traditions. Written evidence of aquaculture in Denmark dates back to 1241. Presently, production is dominated by land‐based facilities producing Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Here the authors present a short review of the history of these fishery sectors, including examples of their cultural importance as well as their current state and future perspectives.

Despite the importance of straying in understanding the ecology of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. and steelhead O. mykiss, most of what is known about straying comes from tagged hatchery fish. In this article, the authors provide estimates of donor straying by natural‐origin spring, summer, and fall Chinook Salmon O. tshawytscha and summer steelhead at three spatial scales in the upper Columbia River watershed by using PIT tags.

Fishery‐independent surveys have become increasingly prevalent in recent decades for monitoring the population trends of highly mobile species like elasmobranchs (sharks and rays). Despite the utility of gear evaluations for streamlining costs and increasing efficiency, these assessments are sparse for elasmobranch‐specific surveys. Catch data were examined from a fishery‐independent longline and gill‐net survey that targeted elasmobranchs in Florida's southern Indian River Lagoon.

The U.S. Council on Environmental Quality recently released plans to substantially revise the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), one of the most important U.S. environmental laws. AFS and other science societies requested an extension of the comment period for these revisions, which are currently due March 10.

Marine finfish aquaculture in the United States represents an opportunity to provide domestic seafood, create jobs, contribute to coastal economies, and help improve community health.
