As a result of growing demand for immediate‐release sedatives in fisheries research, electroimmobilization has been receiving increasing attention due to its superior induction and recovery times and practicality, particularly under field conditions. However, a review of electroimmobilization and its role in fisheries science has not been previously conducted. We describe and differentiate the various forms of electroimmobilization and attempt to standardize relevant terminology.

In 2009, the American Fisheries Society published Standard Methods for Sampling North American Freshwater Fishes. Since publication, numerous management agencies have adopted AFS standard methods. However, few agencies have reported on the utility of AFS standard methods. Here we discuss the process of adopting AFS passive standard methods for sampling lakes and reservoirs in South Dakota during 2012–2017 by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks.

Advances in underwater camera technology provide an affordable means to quantify the environmental conditions under which fish spawn. We deployed 12 modified security cameras underwater to identify environmental conditions related to the spawning behavior of the critically endangered Moapa Dace Moapa coriacea, a Mojave Desert stream‐dwelling cyprinid that had never been observed spawning and that had fallen to a low of 459 individual fish 4 years prior to this study.

The Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies, a group of nine professional societies with a total of more than 20,000 member scientists, strongly criticized the new definition of the “Waters of the United States (WOTUS)” announced by the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers. The redefinition is inconsistent with the best-available science and removes protection for millions of stream miles and acres of wetlands that keep waters and watersheds healthy.

AFS publications is pleased to announce Shona Whyte will serve as editor for the Journal of Aquatic Animal Health. Whyte is a research scientist, and adjunct professor and graduate faculty within the Department of Pathology and Microbiology at the University of Prince Edward Island’s Atlantic Veterinary College.
