In September and October 2019 the American Fisheries Society and The Wildlife Society joined together for an unprecedented gathering of fish and wildlife professionals. Nearly 4,400 attendees and guests participated in plenary sessions, poster events, continuing education, and social networking in the spirit of the conference theme, Common Pathways to Conservation. The joint conference featured a number of highlights to make it an historic event for collaborative conservation.

Fisheries scientists have been working on balancing fish population growth with human demand for decades, and currently many of Florida’s important fish species are protected via a myriad of management tools. However, there is one fish species that has been consistently ignored, despite it being extremely important!

Recreational fisheries are often managed to provide satisfying fishing experiences for anglers while conserving wild fish stocks. However, managing recreational fisheries is difficult because fish populations are often infrequently monitored and fishing effort is uncontrolled; moreover, a satisfying fishery may draw many anglers, which may lead to enhanced risk of overfishing.

Yellowstone Lake is the site of actions to suppress invasive Lake Trout Salvelinus namaycush. To increase suppression efficiency, we developed an alternative method using organic (soy and wheat) pellets to increase mortality of Lake Trout embryos on spawning sites.

AFS has long supported increased funding for the U.S Geological Survey’s National and Regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CASCs) and Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Units (CRUs). Both programs received a significant funding boost in the Fiscal Year 2020 budget, signed into law last Friday.

The Direct Enhancement of Snapper Conservation and the Economy through Novel Devices (DESCEND) Act of 2019 will require Gulf of Mexico reef recreational anglers to carry venting or descender devices.

The Fish and Wildlife Relevancy Roadmap is now available from the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA). It provides practical, non-prescriptive guidance agencies can use to adapt to ongoing changes in the social, ecological, and economic context for fish and wildlife conservation. These changes include accelerated habitat loss, declines in biodiversity, the impacts of climate change, and a society that is increasingly diverse, urban, and disconnected from nature. In response to these trends, agencies must find ways to engage more people in conservation.
