Draft 2020-2024 Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan Revision Committee developed the 2020–2024 draft AFS Strategic Plan with the goal of making it a more useful document for AFS Unit leadership when developing their annual plans of work and helping committees and members focus their activities as they relate to the Society’s mission and goals. Comments on the draft Plan are due by August 23rd, with final Governing Board approval and a membership vote planned for the Reno Joint Conference.

Who's Talking? Gender Discrepancy in Conversation at AFS 148 in Atlantic City

A 2017 article presented nine proposed action areas that could be used to enhance diversity and inclusion in AFS. One of the action areas proposed was to “undertake self‐reflection and evaluation,” which includes consciously evaluating who is being heard at events, on panel discussions, and in the scientific literature.

Linking Water Quality and Fishery Management Facilitated the Development of Ecosystem‐based Management in the Great Lakes Basin

In order to achieve greater sustainability of the basin's fisheries, Great Lakes water resource and fishery managers began working together facilitating the development and implementation of ecosystem‐based management in these lakes.

Understanding Fish Assemblage Structure in Lentic Ecosystems: Relative Effects of Abiotic Factors and Management Legacies

This Featured Paper (free access) in the North American Journal of Fisheries Management examines patterns in fish assemblage structure that have rarely been evaluated for lake and reservoir systems, despite sharing recreational species and having similar management goals.

On‐Site Capabilities of a Mobile Laboratory for Aquatic Germplasm Cryopreservation

The cryopreservation of genetic material can be an important tool for researchers and others involved with imperiled fishes, wild fisheries, aquaculture, and biomedical research. The standardization and reliable collection of diverse, high‐quality samples are persistent challenges to the successful cryopreservation of aquatic species.
