With the International Year of the Salmon well underway, the timing is apt to highlight some of the current research being done on this remarkable species. In this themed issue of Fisheries, we bring together four feature articles that focus on different aspects of salmon research and management, and address some of the challenges salmon continue to face.

Sometimes the implications and consensus of scientific findings are so great, so important to our way of life that scientists must act forcefully. For these issues, the time has passed for endless arguing about minutiae; evidence leads to action as the primary path forward.

In this study, the authors used the field‐tested Stream Segment Temperature model (U.S. Geological Survey) to simulate how altering discharge, groundwater input, channel wetted width, and shade prevents the temperatures of White Mountain, Arizona, stream reaches from exceeding the thermal tolerance of Apache Trout Oncorhynchus apache, both under existing conditions and under a climate change scenario.
