The Mystery and Value of Place Names: Can History Help Us Get to the Bottom of Sturgeon Pool?

Through the use of historical research and toponymy, the study of place names and their origins, this article investigates whether an area referred to as “Sturgeon Pool” on a tributary to the Hudson River might be correctly named as historic habitat of Shortnose Sturgeon Acipenser brevirostrum.

Application of Luminescent Netting in Traps to Improve the Catchability of the Snow Crab

This study investigated luminescent netting as a means to improve the catch rates of snow crabs Chionoecetes opilio. A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate the intensity and duration of luminescence using time‐lapse photography.

Predicting Persistence of Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout Populations in an Uncertain Future

Conservation of rare and endangered species will become more complex in a changing climate. This paper describes a robust approach for synthesizing the myriad factors that influence the persistence of individual populations in an otherwise uncertain future.

150TH ANNIVERSARY

Meeting of the Generations – Panelists Needed!

Do you have thoughts on the history and the future of AFS and fisheries? Would you like to be part of an exciting panel of older and younger fisheries professionals charged for our 150th anniversary celebration to learning from the past to envision our future? If so, we are looking for about a dozen people to join the “Meeting of the Generations” panel that will convene over the next year to create a unique conversation with AFS membership. This will include a panel at the 2020 Columbus AFS meeting, an article in Fisheries, and use of social media to engage our membership.
