The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has extended the deadline for comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the first phase of Pebble Mine to July 1. Bristol Bay’s unimpaired watersheds and wild, sustainable, commercial, recreational, and subsistence fisheries represent an extraordinarily rare resource of national and global importance. The best available science must be considered in all levels of environmental review and permitting for Pebble Mine, a project whose potential scope is so vast that it would forever alter the watershed and the fisheries resources that rely on it.

Given societal shifts, how do we communicate conservation messages to a society largely detached from the natural world and becoming more diverse, with a concomitant diversity of views on natural resource management? How do we find messages that resonate?

The conservation status of Redband Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri has been an increasing concern of fish managers. Effective fish management first requires an understanding of the spatial distribution of distinct populations and the processes influencing gene flow.

At a time when society appears mistrustful of science, it is critical to understand how scientific credibility is evaluated. To understand how fisheries stakeholders assess scientific credibility, marine resource stakeholders from Maine were asked to discuss perceptions of credible science.
|

During daily fishing operations, spanner crab Ranina ranina catch rates can fluctuate substantially, but the environmental drivers responsible for these fluctuations largely remain unresolved. Earlier research suggests that spanner crab catchability increases with strengthening currents, but uncertainties surround the magnitude of the measured current speeds and, consequently, their relationship with catch rates.
