In anticipation of a narrower WOTUS rule, AFS has released a new paper that highlights the loss of ecosystem services, the increased threat to imperiled species, impacts to commercial and recreational fisheries, and the loss of cultural value from reduced Clean Waters Act protection for headwater systems.

AFS members and Units will soon be able to comment on impacts of the Clean Water Act. In this study, St. Mary’s University of Minnesota analyzed the surprising impacts of the proposed rule in three states with diverse watersheds, which may provide guidance for comments.

Populations of nonnative catfishes have been established in the Cape Fear, Black, Lumber, and Waccamaw rivers in southeastern North Carolina for 20–50 years. In response to native fish declines, the removal of nonnative catfishes has been encouraged in specific reaches of these rivers by utilizing recreational hand‐crank electrofishing (HCE).
