This Climate Week, AFS urged Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry to take action to protect fisheries from climate change by reducing global emissions and promoting land and water-based conservation solutions, which are critical to capture carbon and to make our rivers, lakes and streams, forests, grasslands, wetlands, and coastal systems more resilient to the impacts of climate change. Kerry will be representing the US at the COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in November.

The question of climate change, and what can or should be done about it, has become a politically charged controversy that has moved well outside of the scientific and technical questions that should compose the critical core of this discussion. And while climate change denialism is solidly and embarrassingly centered in my own nation, the impacts of denialism and climate inaction already impact our entire planet.

It is often said that as AFS members, we are great at speaking to each other. We love to share graphs and statistics, but that passion for data often doesn’t resonate with journalists, policymakers, or other audiences. The skills needed to connect with non-scientists about our work and how it relates to the changing climate generally falls outside the communication comfort zone for many of our members. The good news is that many fisheries professionals are looking to be part of changing the narrative around climate change, and are eager to develop the skills that will help them be effective in their communication efforts.

Recent declines in abundance of Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri in the upper Blackfoot River drainage in Idaho coincided with establishment of a nearby nesting colony and increased abundance of American white pelicans Pelecanus erythrorhynchos. A Bayesian state-space model that integrated survival and abundance data was used in this study to evaluate the effects of local pelican abundance on survival, abundance, and population growth rate of Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout.
