The Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting (JASM) Program Committee invites proposals for symposia, pre-conference workshops and professional development courses, and integrated events which support the conference theme of "Rapid Changes ~ Collaborative Solutions." JASM22 will bring together nine aquatic science societies in Grand Rapids, Michigan, May 14-20, 2022. Session proposals are due by September 24, 2021.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona has vacated the Trump-era Navigable Waters Protection Rule, noting that the agencies failed to consider the scientific record. The Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies urged EPA and the Army to quickly re-establish a durable, science-based definition of Waters of the the United States (WOTUS) that will allow the Clean Water Act to fulfill its mandate to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation’s waters. A group of science, conservation, and outdoor organizations, including AFS, also filed comments.

Hydroelectricity provides 6% of U.S. electrical power needs, but hydro-dams block migrations of both anadromous and catadromous fishes. Dam removal is an effective way of restoring dwindling migratory fish populations by allowing unrestricted pathways to their spawning areas and for the downstream migrations of post-spawning adults and juveniles. For the replacement of energy foregone from a dam removal, various alternative energy installations are now feasible. Here, the authors present a one-to-one conceptual replacement of hydropower with photovoltaic outputs for large and small river systems in Maine.

Winter Flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus, a coastal flatfish species of historically economic and cultural importance, have declined throughout the past few decades within the southern New England and mid-Atlantic region of the United States, reaching a low point of less than 9% of their historic biomass in 2009. To better understand local declines in recruitment productivity, the authors of this paper assessed vital rates of age-0 Winter Flounder in five different bays in Long Island, New York.

In 2004, after an 85+ year absence, Sockeye Salmon Oncorhynchus nerka were reintroduced into Skaha Lake, British Columbia. Prior to this, the lake’s planktivore community was dominated by kokanee and an invasive freshwater shrimp Mysis diluviana. British Columbia fisheries managers were concerned that reintroduced Sockeye Salmon fry might reduce the abundance of zooplankton prey and negatively affect the abundance and size of kokanee available for the recreational fishery. This study looked for possible adverse effects by introducing contrasting densities (0–2,309 fish/ha) of marked, hatchery-origin Sockeye Salmon fry to Skaha Lake over 12 years.

Topics include: potential effects of bigheaded carps (Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Bighead Carp H. nobilis) on food webs of the Laurentian Great Lakes, fish assemblages and stressors in the Yangtze River basin, and biology and management of many different fish and aquatic species such as Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides, Spotted Bass M. punctulatus, American Shad Alosa sapidissima, Japanese Eel Anguilla japonica, Lake Sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens, and Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis in the Mississippi, Yangtze, and other related river basins.

The AFS title Inland Fisheries Management in North America, edited by Wayne Hubert and Michael Quist, has been translated and published in China by China Agricultural Press. The edition's publication coincides with a recent rise in inland recreational fisheries in China.
