The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act was introduced in the Senate (S.2372) last week by Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and Roy Blunt (R-MO). This groundbreaking legislation is gaining momentum in both chambers in Congress, and now has 100 cosponsors in the House. A House Natural Resources subcommittee also held a hearing on the act and other wildlife and fisheries bills this week.

Seven aquatic science societies, including AFS, sent a letter to Congressional leadership urging action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions to protect our aquatic resources from the effects of climate change.

Abstracts for oral symposium presentations, contributed papers, and posters are all due on August 16. To assist those who have experienced delays in their research and analysis due to the pandemic, we will also be offering late-breaking research "speed presentation" slots - more information to come this fall.

Each summer, high school students gear up to get hands-on experience in the field of fisheries science through the Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program. We were able to meet two alumni of the Hutton Program via video conferencing and learn about how their experiences as Hutton Scholars influenced their lives.

Although fisheries challenges evolve rapidly, historical approaches may provide “new” tools for managers. In the state of Washington, the Makah Tribe have used čibu·d, their traditional fishhook, to target Pacific Halibut long before the advent of modern fisheries. The authors describe their experience in rediscovering this historical harvesting method, testing species selectivity, refining the approach, and producing a tool ready for application in modern fisheries management.

Hutton Scholar Summit
Virginia Tech welcomed 16 Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program Scholars this week for the first ever Hutton Scholar Summit. This two-day conference allowed students to hear from university faculty and students, tour the campus and labs, and discuss career paths with state and federal agency employers. The Scholars also gave presentations on the work they have completed this summer, and they formed potential lifelong connections with other Hutton Scholars.

This summer's Hutton Challenge is still ongoing! Support this important paid internship program for high school students to stimulate interest in careers in fisheries science and management among groups underrepresented in the fisheries professions today.

The Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting (JASM) Program Committee invites proposals for symposia, pre-conference workshops and professional development courses, and integrated events which support the conference theme of "Rapid Changes ~ Collaborative Solutions." JASM2022 will bring together nine aquatic science societies in Grand Rapids, Michigan, May 14-20, 2022. Session proposals are due by September 24, 2021.
