Miguel Garcia-Bermudez, Ph.D., Fish and Wildlife Administrator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Science Application Program (U.S. Caribbean), has been elected Second Vice President of the American Fisheries Society. This vote will make Dr. Garcia President of AFS in 2024-2025.

AFS and The Wildlife Society urged House appropriators to expand U.S. Geological Survey Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Unit funding to allow the addition of new units in Michigan and Indiana.
|

AFS asked Congress to double the investment in Farm Bill conservation programs for climate resilience. These conservation programs provide the financial aid and technical assistance that allows farmers and ranchers to improve soil health and water efficiency, reduce flooding and erosion, mitigate impacts of drought, and improve fish and wildlife habitat. Call your senators and ask them to increase the funding for important Farm Bill conservation programs.

AFS journals saw notable increases in impact factor (IF) in 2020, led by the North American Journal of Aquaculture doubling its IF to 1.717, Transactions increasing from 1.44 to 1.8, the Journal of Aquatic Animal Health rising from 1.3 to 1.6, and Fisheries magazine now increasing from 2.7 to 2.97. This book, intended as a tribute to the life and accomplishments of one of the world’s premiere scientists in fisheries and whale biology, population dynamics, and stock assessment—Sidney J. Holt—contains a cross-section of Holt’s writings from a career that spanned eight decades, some of which have never been published before. For fisheries and whale scientists, as well as others interested in the history of fisheries and whaling science and management, this book is highly recommended as it captures the thinking of one of the world’s foremost scientists.

Eastern oysters were collected by state resource management agencies throughout the Gulf of Mexico, and basic morphological measurements from individual oysters (height, length, width, volume, weight) were compared on a regional scale. Shape differences among regional oyster populations implies the potential for similar regional variation in important biological features, such as growth, reproduction, physiology, or disease resistance.

Catch-and-release fishing tournaments undoubtedly reduce target species mortality; however, post-release mortality and fish stockpiling at release sites remain common concerns. Red Drum and Spotted Seatrout are popular marine sport fisheries with competitive fishing tournaments, but information on tournament post-weigh-in mortality and dispersal was limited. Red Drum fisheries may benefit most from live-release tournaments given that maximum mortality was < 10%, but Spotted Seatrout fisheries may also benefit, especially if considerations are made to further reduce tournament mortality.

The Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting (JASM) Program Committee invites proposals for symposia, pre-conference workshops and professional development courses, and integrated events which support the conference theme of "Rapid Changes ~ Collaborative Solutions." JASM2022 will bring together nine aquatic science societies in Grand Rapids, Michigan, May 14-20, 2022. Session proposals are due by September 24, 2021.

Since the end of the federal Cooperative Instream Flow Service Group in 2001, no substitute centralized source of training and support services for instream flow and water level conservation studies has been established. The Instream Flow Council and AFS are conducting a multi-state conservation grant project to determine the need for, feasibility of, and path towards establishing a new instream flow and water level conservation training center. A survey of agencies, businesses, organizations, and individuals to identify the interest in and level of support for such a center is open until Friday, August 6, 2021.
