The bipartisan Recovering America’s Wildlife Act is the most impactful wildlife conservation funding bill in a generation. The bill will dedicate $1.3 billion annually to state fish and wildlife agencies to implement science-based wildlife action plans and an additional $97.5 million for tribal fish and wildlife managers to conserve fish and wildlife on tribal lands and waters.

A "Dear Colleague" letter circulating in the House requesting support for robust funding for the State and Tribal Wildlife Grants (STWG) program has garnered 171 signatures. The STWG program provides state, territories, and Tribes with resources needed to implement proactive and effective wildlife conservation actions critical to recovering endangered and threatened species and preventing further species from becoming listed.

In 1997, for the first time in history, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission ordered the removal of a dam (Edwards Dam) for the purpose of restoring fisheries to a river system (the Kennebec River). This is the first paper to provide a comprehensive review of ecological conditions in the Kennebec River before and after the removal of Edwards Dam.

As an initial step towards the implementation of an ecosystem‐based approach to management, the Caribbean Fishery Management Council has recently ratified three island‐based fishery management plans that will supplant the existing regional plans. The newly formed management plans account for nuances among the island platforms in the U.S. Caribbean, including ecological, cultural, and social considerations. The island‐based approach represents a novel strategy among the eight fishery management councils in the United States and therefore remains an untested technique.

New AFS Section Approved
|
The new Cooperative Research with Stakeholders Section was approved by AFS members in an online vote. The Section aims to advance the Society’s promotion of scientific research and sustainable management of fisheries resources by encouraging and facilitating research partnerships among scientists, stakeholders, and resource users, especially commercial fishermen/harvesters and recreational anglers. The next Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting (JASM) of the Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies will be held May 16-20, 2022 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Under the theme of "Rapid Changes - Collaborative Solutions" nine societies will gather to share science, network, and collaborate on common issues. This event is in addition to next year's regular AFS Annual Meeting in Spokane, Washington, in August.
