Due to time and resource limitations, the growth of many fish species is evaluated with age and length data in a length‐stratified subsample of a sample from a population. In this Featured Paper in NAJFM, the authors compare the aged-only, weighted‐mean, and assigned‐age methods against two emerging alternatives, the reweighting and empirical proportion methods.

A recent surge in popularity has sensationalized the use of carbonated beverages to treat bleeding catch-and-release fish—an intervention that is purported to stop bleeding but has yet to be validated scientifically. The authors captured Northern Pike Esox lucius via hook and line and experimentally injured their gills in a standardized manner. Gill injuries were treated with Mountain Dew, Coca‐Cola, or carbonated lake water.

The authors identified and quantified the major migration routes through the Discovery Islands region of British Columbia to determine the degree that juvenile salmon use routes where salmon farms are sited, and measured the time spent near individual salmon farms in 2017 and 2018. These metrics contribute to the degree of exposure and can be used to inform risk analyses for British Columbia Sockeye Salmon populations.

Many efforts are underway to help address issues to increase gender equity in our field. It will take efforts from all to help address the issues facing women in our field, and men are important allies in this process and crucial agents of change. In this essay, the authors outline actions that can be taken to be active allies for women in fisheries science.

Effective engagement among scientists, government agency staff, and policymakers is necessary for solving fisheries issues, but remains challenging for a variety of reasons. The authors of this paper present seven practices learned from a collaborative project focused on invasive species in the Great Lakes region (USA‐CAN). These practices were based on a researcher–manager model composed of a research team, a management advisory board, and a bridging organization.
