The nine aquatic science societies of CASS urged the Biden administration to return to a science-based Waters of the US (WOTUS) rule, citing the loss of protections for millions of stream miles and acres of wetlands that will lead to dire consequences for fish, fisheries, wildlife, watersheds, water quality and supply, flood control, as well as the people and economies that rely on them. The effects of climate change on precipitation patterns, ephemeral streams, and isolated wetlands magnifies the need for quick action.

A coalition of 32 outdoor, conservation, and science organizations, including AFS, called for the Biden Administration to implement nature-based solutions to climate change along with greenhouse gas reductions. Land and water based management strategies in agriculture, forestry, grasslands, oceans, rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands, and coastal areas could mitigate up to a third of carbon emissions while providing employment and economic opportunities, improving air and water quality, and benefitting fish and wildlife.

The authors present a 100‐watt protocol for backpack electrofishing to capture salmonids in small streams. The protocol requires that electrofisher settings produce ~100 W of average power output. Despite significant variation in pulse frequency, fish size, and water conductivity, the 100‐W target works for salmonids in small streams because fish are especially vulnerable to electrofishing in small water volumes where boundary effects concentrate the electric field. Avenues of further research are highlighted that would more fully evaluate the 100‐W method.

Better understanding of the degree of “passability” needed to sustain robust sub‐populations upstream of barriers could help address and perhaps eliminate perceived trade‐offs between fish passage and other resource management goals. In this paper, the authors demonstrate how passage objectives less ambitious than “all the fish, all the time” may sometimes suffice to maintain populations of resident trout and anadromous salmon.

AFS has created Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for over 100 book titles, along with their chapters. DOIs will aid indexing and discoverability of AFS book titles, much like our journal articles. We expect that the assignment of DOIs for AFS books will increase their reach and impact. Repositories, aggregators, and indexing services rely on DOIs to accurately identify scholarly research. Authors and researchers use DOIs to quickly locate and cite the source of the information. A DOI never changes, providing a persistent link to the research wherever it may reside in the future.

Membership Vote on New Cooperative Research Section
|
At the mid-year meeting of the AFS Governing Board earlier this month, the Board unanimously authorized a vote of the membership to establish a new Cooperative Research with Stakeholders Section (CRSS). The establishment of a new AFS Section requires approval from the membership in the form of a simple majority vote. AFS members have already been sent a vote email with instructions, so check your inbox or spam folder. Reminders will be sent to those who haven't yet voted.
