AFS has changed the dates for the 151st Annual Meeting in Baltimore to November 6-10, 2021, from the original date of August 8-12. Please note that this is a Saturday to Wednesday meeting schedule rather than the traditional Sunday to Thursday. This change is being made with the desire to safely host an in-person meeting and to celebrate our 150th anniversary, albeit one year late. The meeting will also include remote participation options and AFS will transition to a full virtual option should the COVID-19 situation make that the appropriate and safe choice. New deadlines will be provided soon for symposium and abstract submissions. Please check the meeting website for updates.

Nominations for 2021 AFS awards are now open. The call for award nominations includes awards that recognize professional excellence and/or outstanding contributions to conservation, education, and service. All award nominations are due April 1.

In spite of the COVID‐19 pandemic, the American Fisheries Society gathered virtually to share the latest fisheries research, learn about international fisheries, and discuss policy and other fisheries issues. Though different than a traditional in‐person meeting, AFS adapted to offer members 2 weeks of plenary sessions, special theme days, panel discussions, symposia presentations, student activities, and continuing education. The first ever AFS Virtual Annual Meeting contained a number of highlights that made it a unique and rewarding experience.

In this paper, the authors explore the news messaging surrounding the introduction and expansion of Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus in mid‐Atlantic tidal waters. In the early news reports surrounding the non‐native catfish controversy, the species was described with hyperboles and terms that evoked threats, danger, and the need for caution, all of which make science‐based debate difficult.

Applications for the 2021 Steven Berkeley Marine Conservation Fellowship are due by February 1. The fellowship comprises a competitively based $10,000 award to a graduate student actively engaged in thesis research relevant to marine conservation.

The Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program is a paid summer internship and mentoring program for high school students to stimulate interest in careers in fisheries science and management among groups underrepresented in the fisheries professions, including minorities & women. Hutton Class of 2021 student and mentor applications are now both open and are due by February 15 for students and March 1 for mentors.
