This feature article in the Journal of Aquatic Animal Health provides perspectives and recommendations on a very timely issue facing fishery managers and aquatic animal health professionals; namely, what to do when faced with the molecular detection of a novel and/or emerging fish pathogen? The detection of potentially foreign nucleic acid sequences in tissues of healthy fish is insufficient information on which to expend additional effort and resources to make changes to existing surveillance and disease policies of affected resource agencies and other user groups. This paper provides investigative criteria for decision pathways that establish corroborating facts to evaluate whether the discovered molecular presence of an infectious agent is a significant risk for causing disease in an aquatic animal resource.

The authors developed models that can be used to simultaneously estimate fishing and natural mortality. This was necessary because one potential management action would influence fishing mortality, while the other will affect natural mortality. Such a model was then used to evaluate the alternative management actions.

Data provided by the Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) shrimp/groundfish trawl survey have long been used in assessing diverse managed taxa, including several reef fishes; however, there are rising concerns over the impacts of trawling on live-bottom habitats. Using data collected from summer SEAMAP trawl surveys, the authors examined how avoiding areas of live-bottom habitat might affect the survey's ability to assess interannual changes in abundance of managed reef fish taxa.

One of my very favorite things about doing what I do, which is writing environmental impact statements and endangered species consultations, is trying to figure out cumulative effects. Cumulative effects are somewhat challenging because they require you to envision multiple paths out into the future where (1) a project occurs and (2) where it doesn't, then follow those paths to see how their destinations differ. Cumulative effects analysis requires us to be visionary. I would argue that this visionary perspective is a key to effective planning from local work all the way to addressing international climate planning.

A primary goal of fisheries management is to maximize angler satisfaction (e.g., by catching more and bigger fish), while maintaining sustainable populations. In addition to environmental and ecological factors, angler choices may influence recreational catches. Using interviews from Walleye Sander vitreus anglers in Lake Erie during 1989–2017, this paper identifies how angler behavior influences catch outcomes.

Responsive Management and the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI), in partnership with the Hudson River Sustainable Shorelines Project, are presenting a free webinar on conservation words that work. The webinar will cover the results of a major study recently completed by Responsive Management and WMI on the conservation words and phrases that resonate the most with the American public. The study was predicated on the fact that words matter—that the individual terms and phrases used by conservation professionals to describe their work can mean the difference between concern and apathy among everyday U.S. residents. Persuasive communicators routinely employ specific words and phrases to guarantee maximum impact in the framing of concepts and ideas. The task of the conservation community is no different: when communicating about the purpose and benefits of conservation, we must use language strategically to invest as many people as possible in our work.
