The Second Vice President elected this year will serve as President in 2026-2027. AFS works with its eight partner societies in the Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies (CASS; aquaticsocieties.org) on a variety of issues related to environmental and aquatic policy. In order to equip the societies and their members to more effectively engage in policy and communication with lawmakers and decision-makers, AFS is hosting a science communication and policy training for all of the societies on Sunday, May 15, for half a day beginning at 8:30 am in person in Grand Rapids.

We are looking for AFS members of any career stage who will be attending JASM in person to take part in the session. The expectation is that moving forward the participants would also be interested in getting involved with CASS's future policy and outreach efforts. This feature article highlights the tremendous efforts of the Columbia River Treaty Tribes to restore abundance of Pacific Lamprey Entosphenus tridentatus in the Snake River basin via translocations. This large data set of over 25,000 fish samples and many genetic markers (260) has helped build a strong case that translocations have had direct success at increasing larval and juvenile abundance, and one day translocations will return adult offspring to the Columbia River.

North Atlantic right whales are subject to entanglement in fixed gear fishery vertical lines throughout their range, with mortality risk increasing with line strength and spatial density. This study modeled the hauling load requirements of the Maine fishery for American lobster Homarus americanus using measurements of strain put on lines used in typical lobster fishery operations to determine the minimum strength necessary to fish safely and effectively.

Widespread mortality of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. returning to spawn in Alaska coincided with record-breaking air temperatures and prolonged drought in summer 2019. Extreme environmental conditions are expected to happen more frequently with rapid climate change and challenge the notion that Alaska could indefinitely provide abundant, cool freshwater habitat for Pacific salmon.

The Netflix documentary Seaspiracy portrays serious issues driven by illegal and exploitative fishing, including stock collapse, habitat destruction, biodiversity loss, perverse subsidies, high seas crime, human labor abuses, and modern slavery. Certainly, an alarming number of fisheries remain overfished and exhibit these issues, particularly in places where industrialized fleets exploit waters that lack the capacity for management and enforcement. However, the film’s omission of any success stories biases a documentary on overfishing into agenda-driven propaganda.

Climate Plan Comments
|
NOAA Fisheries invites public comment on seven draft 2022-24 Climate Regional Action Plans (RAPs) released last week. They are particularly interested in input on the clarity of the goals and activities, ways to strengthen the plans, and what additional goals and activities need to be addressed. Comments must be submitted by June 2, 2022 to be considered in development of the final RAPs. Information on the draft RAPs and the call for public input is available on their website.
