Population Structure and Regional Connectivity of Young Snowy Grouper in the Gulf of Mexico and Western Atlantic Ocean

This article describes detailed regional patterns of otolith chemistry across the Gulf of Mexico and western Atlantic Ocean in the threatened Snowy Grouper Hyporthodus niveatus. This is the first attempt made to assess the population structure of this commercial species within U.S. territorial waters.

Catch-and-Release Ice Fishing: Status, Issues, and Research Needs

Catch-and-release ice fishing is a popular form of recreational angling. At present, there is a considerable deficiency in our understanding of how ice angling affects the physiology, behavior, and survival of fishes. This review summarizes our current knowledge of the consequences of winter catch-and-release fishing on fish biology and to identify key knowledge gaps.

What Can the Effects of COVID Reveal About Lingering Obstacles to Retention for Women in STEM?

We are all tired of COVID-19. The shift to virtual work and increased stress from worry about our families, friends, and events affecting people we may not even know has affected everyone. However, it has also uncovered lingering obstacles for women in our workforce.

Stepping Up: A U.S. Perspective on the Ten Steps to Responsible Inland Fisheries

The "Ten Steps to Responsible Inland Fisheries" are global recommendations to address the subordinate position of inland fisheries in sustainability dialogues. Regional and local perspectives are essential for implementing global initiatives. Hence, the authors of this paper surveyed state fisheries agency administrators and AFS Governing Board members about the importance, funding, and achievability of the steps.

Society Diversity Survey

AFS is committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in our society and profession. As part of our commitment, we’re asking for AFS members to participate in the 2022 Society Diversity Survey. This survey is being administered by Western Washington University and is funded through the National Science Foundation’s LEAPS award (Leading Cultural Change through Professional Societies of Biology). The survey is also being administered to other Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies (CASS) member societies.

We are asking all AFS members to participate in this important survey effort. The questionnaire is short and is expected to take less than 10 minutes to complete. Please check your email for the survey link sent on March 3.

Rotenone Training Course

Register now for this spring's Planning & Executing Successful Rotenone & Antimycin Projects training course, May 23-27 in Logan, Utah, a 4½ day training course for biologists who manage the planning and execution of rotenone or antimycin projects. The course stresses public involvement, safety, planning, and new application restrictions and techniques from the AFS Rotenone SOP Manual. The course was developed to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency re-registration requirements.

Gray Literature Database

Thousands of fisheries reports, documents, and other gray literature are now available through the AFS Gray Literature Database. Accessible online (graylitreports.fisheries.org), this is a freely available tool with full-text searchability for anyone to access. Agencies with documents that could be included into the database can also work with AFS to get them uploaded and available to the fisheries community. This project is funded by a Multistate Conservation Grant through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For more information, contact Peter Turcik at [email protected].
