AFS partnered with The Wildlife Society, National Wildlife Federation, and the Native American Fish and Wildlife Society to host a briefing for members of Congress and staff on the Recovering America's Wildlife Act. Appearing at the briefing to express their support were Representative Debbie Dingell and Senators Martin Heinrich and Roy Blunt. On the scientific panel, Mamie Parker provided examples of collaborative fisheries conservation projects similar to what could be funded through the Act.

The Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies (CASS) filed comments with the Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers on proposed revisions to the Waters of the US Rule. CASS called for the repeal of the 2020 Navigable Waters Protection Rule and a return to a modified pre-2015 regulatory regime, as an interim step, while the agencies work to craft a more considered and durable definition of WOTUS consistent with current science and the Clean Water Act.

Adaptive management has been adopted as the standard approach to inform the multi-billion-dollar post-Deepwater Horizon coastal restoration programs in the Gulf of Mexico. An adaptive management process can help restoration projects at multiple spatial scales—from local shorelines to entire ecosystems—by identifying critical uncertainties and guiding restoration actions away from trial and error and toward an evidence-based approach. Based on their experiences, the authors of this paper identify challenges that must be overcome in developing large-scale adaptive management in the Gulf of Mexico.

Market squid Doryteuthis opalescens comprise the largest fishery (by volume) in California and questions persist about whether the changing ocean conditions are leading to an increase in squid abundance in traditional fishing locations as well as marginal habitats in northern areas. To examine this potential phenomenon, the authors of this paper used fisheries-independent survey data collected by the National Marine Fisheries Service between 1998 and 2019 to develop a spatiotemporal model that estimates changes in the squid density from central California to northern Washington.

Thousands of fisheries reports, documents, and other gray literature are now available through the AFS Gray Literature Database. Accessible online (graylitreports.fisheries.org), this is a freely available tool with full-text searchability for anyone to access. Agencies with documents that could be included into the database can also work with AFS to get them uploaded and available to the fisheries community.
