Abstract | A detailed understanding of environmental parameters allows oyster aquaculturists to make better informed decisions and improve production. Oyster health and growth rate can be influenced by water temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, daily air exposure time, and wave action. However, no commercially available, affordable sensor is ideally suited to capture this suite of data, especially from within an oyster aquaculture bag. This need can be addressed by design of custom devices incorporating accelerometric and environmental sensors, and wireless data transfer capability. Drawing on the rapid prototyping resources of the Aquatic Germplasm and Genetic Resources Center, we will follow an established iterative development pathway to move from proof-of-concept prototypes to an adaptable multi-sensor platform. The device will be field tested at oyster farm sites in Alabama and Louisiana, with validation against existing environmental sensors. In the long term, accelerometry data and water quality parameters will be evaluated for correlation with mortality, growth rate, and other response metrics. It is our aim to provide such devices as open-source designs to the larger aquaculture community, and to support wider application in aquatic research and conservation. |
