The Blackbanded Sunfish Enneacanthus chaetodon is a small sunfish species that typically occupies lentic habitats, with dense submersed vegetation and low pH. Historical records suggest that Blackbanded Sunfish are rare in Florida, however, available data are insufficient to evaluate their current distribution and status. We have conducted targeted surveys for Blackbanded Sunfish across their known range in the Florida since 2014. Multiple sampling gears were used including electrofishing, seining, dip-netting, and Fyke netting. The most commonly detected species include Eastern Mosquitofish Gambusia holbrookii (52 sites), Golden Topminnow Fundulus chrysotus (43 sites), and Warmouth Lepomis gulosus (40 sites). We collected Blackbanded Sunfish at 5 of 87 sites, including 0 of 16 pre-2000 collection locations. We used site occupancy models to estimate occupancy and detection probabilities for Blackbanded Sunfish and commonly co-occurring species. Although occupancy estimates were low for Blackbanded Sunfish, detection (p = 71%) was relatively high. Warmouth, Golden Topminnow, Pygmy Killifish Leptolucania ommata, Lined Topminnow Fundulus lineolatus, and Bluespotted Sunfish Enneacanthus gloriosus were the only species collected at all 5 sites where Blackbanded Sunfish were collected. Results will help inform a future biological status review for this species.
