Cryopreservation of germplasm from aquatic organisms, especially threatened and endangered species, plays an important role in conservation of species and management of wild populations. We propose to design and fabricate by 3-D printing and electrical engineering technologies an automated freezing device capable of adjustment of cooling rates and monitoring of freezing temperatures. The proposed device will be evaluated for use with Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica), and will provide standardizable on-site freezing by use of portable cryogenic shipping dewars.
