AFS Accomplishments in 2024:
With the help of your membership and support, check out the great things that AFS was able to accomplish in 2024. Over the past year, AFS:
- Published three new fisheries textbooks, including the popular Standard Methods for Sampling North American Freshwater Fishes, Second Edition
- Provided decisionmakers with science-based information regarding critical fisheries issues including the need to remove Snake River dams to ensure fish sustainability
- Using sound science, educated policymakers on the importance of amending the Endangered Species Act, and advocated for funding for aquaculture, federal science agencies, and other critical conservation programs
- Successfully placed 37 high school students in paid summer internships with fisheries professionals as part of the AFS Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program
- Hosted the World Fisheries Congress, bringing more than 1,500 globally prominent fisheries scientists together from around the world to discuss the critical challenges facing freshwater and marine fisheries, and aquatic ecosystems.
- Continued its strong efforts to make all fisheries professionals feel welcome and included
- Changed AFS’s publisher of its journals to better service the membership and fisheries community
- Developed an Action Plan in response to the 2022 Membership Survey
- Revamped its website to better meet the needs of the membership
Under the leadership of AFS’s new Executive Director Jeff Kopaska and President Miguel Garcia, we are excited to see how we can expand on these accomplishments and make 2025 better than ever!
