Observers live and work aboard domestic commercial fishing vessels, gathering data crucial to the conservation & management of the west coast Groundfish fishery. Observers live on-call in their home-port and work at sea on average 15 days/month. Fisheries observing is a challenging and unique position. Sorting a sample at sea is physically demanding, quarters onboard are tight, and diplomacy is required.
A Bachelor’s in a natural science, 30 semester hours in biology, a college course in both math and statistics, and a college course using dichotomous keys.
