As an at-sea biologist working aboard U.S.-flagged commercial fishing vessels, you will gather data essential to the sustainability of fisheries resources in Alaska. Observers sample catches to determine their species composition, make estimates of total catch, and collect age structures and biological data from target species. New observers start with a one year commitment worked as multiple deployments spread out over the year for an approximate total of 270-290 deployed days. Observers are guaranteed subsequent deployment opportunities and salary advances. This is not a 9-5 office job, observers work long, irregular hours, wearing rain gear and lifting and moving large quantities of fish while at sea.
A Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, 30 semester hours in biological sciences, a college course in both math and statistics, a college course using dichotomous keys, U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident Alien status.
