The job entails a broad range of responsibilities supporting the hatchery manager in the fish culture, harvest, egg-take and various other tasks producing 105m pink salmon, 60m chums, and 5m cohos at the remote and beautiful Port Armstrong Hatchery in SE Alaska.
In-depth knowledge of salmon culture; Alaska hatchery experience beneficial. Ability to apply sound fish culture practices and learn specific techniques that have been developed successfully for this site. Ability to organize time, solve problems and work cooperatively with other staff and with a minimum of supervision. Good physical health and the strength to lift 70 lbs are required to carry out the associated tasks. The ability to get along well with co-workers, show initiative, and thrive in a remote wilderness location are essential. Maintenance skills and a willingness to learn to operate and troubleshoot the complex hatchery water system are desirable.
