Job: Field Biologist/Fisheries Observer

Title Field Biologist/Fisheries Observer
Agency, Location Alaskan Observers, Inc./ Dutch Harbor, AK & Seattle, WA
Categories Permanent
Job # 13445
Salary $4,098.30 per month to begin with, plus room, board, and travel to and from job site. Raises and access to future work guaranteed.
Start Date 8/5/19

As an at-sea biologist working aboard U.S.-flagged commercial fishing vessels, you will gather data crucial to the conservation & management of Alaska’s Groundfish fishery.  Observers record fishing effort and location information, sample for bycatch composition, and collect biological data from both bycatch and target species.  Observers go into the field for 70-90 day deployments, during which time they are based out of Dutch Harbor, AK and living/working at sea on commercial fishing vessels.

Fisheries Observing is a challenging and unique position. This is not a 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. job–rather, twelve to fourteen hour days are the rule. Gathering, sorting, and weighing a sample at sea is a physically demanding job, and recording the data gathered requires a biologist’s attention to detail. The work is further complicated by the fact that observers and fisherman have different objectives–diplomatic efforts on the observer’s part, aimed at securing a mutually agreeable working environment, are often part of the job.

Positions begin with a 3-week paid training in Seattle.

A Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, 30 semester hours in biological sciences, a college course in both math and statistics, a college course using dichotomous keys, U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident Alien status.
