Observers live and work aboard domestic commercial fishing vessels, gathering data crucial to the conservation & management of Alaska’s Groundfish fishery. Observers go into the field for 70-90 day deployments based out of Dutch Harbor, AK.
Fisheries observing is a challenging and unique position. Gathering, sorting, and weighing a sample at sea is physically demanding. Observers and fisherman have different objectives at sea and diplomacy is required.
A Bachelor’s in a natural science, 30 semester hours in biology, a college course in both math and statistics, and a college course using dichotomous keys.
