Port Armstrong Hatchery is located at the south end of Baranof Island, about 50 air miles south of Sitka, in Southeast Alaska, with access by floatplane and boat only. Our facility is a remote community of professionals dedicated to enhancing Alaskaʼs salmon fisheries. Our work provides increased fishing opportunities for the common property fisheries of Northern Southeast Alaska and we raise three species of pacific salmon. Located in the heart of the Tongass National Forest, opportunities for outdoor recreation are unsurpassed.
The ideal candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of salmon culture and a demonstrated ability to be an effective leader. The Assistant Manager will work under the direction of the Hatchery manager and will share responsibility for the oversight and performance of any and all aspects of hatchery-related operations and will be responsible for the hatchery in the absence of the Hatchery Manager. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an understanding of the hatcheries water system and must be able to plan and organize both long range and day-to-day operations. This understanding will allow the successful candidate to be an effective leader and to delegate tasks as needed for daily operations.
Good physical health and the ability to thrive in a remote wilderness location are essential. Applicants must be organized and computer literate with a working knowledge of Excel and Word. Other desired skills include skiff operation and outboard maintenance, SCUBA, and knowledge of firearms.
