By 2016, a decade had elapsed since the most recent focused symposium on North American Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) Conservation and Management in 2006 (Paukert and Scholten 2009) and three decades since the first symposium in 1986 (Dillard et al. 1986). The time seemed right to invite experts to meet and update our knowledge of Paddlefish biology, life history, ecology, genetics, habitat use, aquaculture, and management. The Oklahoma Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (AFS) hosted the 2017 annual meeting of the Southern Division of AFS in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and a Special Symposium on Paddlefish management was held as part of that meeting on February 4, 2017.
