Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii have become increasingly rare across their historical range in western North America. Two of the 14 currently recognized subspecies present historically are now extinct, three others are listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA), and each of the remaining nine is named as either a candidate for ESA listing or a state or federal species of special concern because of low or declining numbers.
