In 2003, after five workshops focusing on the ecology of juvenile salmon in the ocean along the west coast of North America, it became clear that similar research was being conducted by the various government agencies and academic institutions from Alaska to California and that an attempt to synthesize the results across regions was needed. My colleagues Rick Brodeur, Lew Haldorson, and Skip McKinnell and I convened a symposium on regional comparisons at the American Fisheries Society (AFS) 2005 annual meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, which focused on comparing and contrasting regional differences and similarities in various aspects of the ecology of juvenile salmon. This book is the product of that effort.
